Biography

Sunny is the Teacher Librarian at Sydney Secondary College Leichhardt Campus and the Secretary of the School Library Association of New South Wales. She is a BOSTES accredited Highly Accomplished Teacher. Combining skills in teacher librarianship and technology integration, Sunny has been instrumental in her school and across the SLANSW network highlighting the need for technology and the maker movement to be embedded in school culture.

She has worked with students to create a technology leadership group who learn, lead and mentor both students and teachers. At Sydney Secondary College Sunny has instigated a girls and technology program that excites girls into learning and sharing new technology skills. Sunny has been a presenter at conferences and mentors other teacher librarians to create future focused libraries and learning spaces in schools.

Future focused schools think differently and work differently. They are designing schooling around the needs and aspirations of their students, while still meeting Australian curriculum standards and assessment.

As schools implement the new Australian Curriculum across learning areas, we are seeing how a stronger focus on inquiry is providing opportunities for schools to move beyond the ‘what’ of teaching to explore the ‘how’ of teaching. This has resulted in some schools reinventing the way they design learning spaces, rethinking the structure of the school day and academic structure of what constitutes a class, and developing personalised learning pathways for individual students within and beyond the school.

These schools are transforming what we have traditionally experienced as school education. They are future focused, and rewriting the rules of engagement in schooling. Students are engaging with issues that will directly affect their future, such as sustainability, globalisation, citizenship, and enterprise. They are developing knowledge, skills, and dispositions to help them cope with what the future may hold. They are designing, creating, and inventing new products and doing things that will help shape their lives as they move into the world of work.

Completing seminar Connected Educator Summit 2016: Future Focused Schooling will contribute 5 hours of QTC Registered PD addressing 1.1.2, 1.5.2, 3.6.2, 4.1.2, 6.2.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
