Biography

Lynn Revai has worked in school libraries for 30 years. She began her career at Doonside High school, and then specialised in new school libraries, including Freeman Catholic College, Bonnyrigg then Loyola College, Mount Druitt. She is passionate about the ’T’ in Teacher Librarian and was appointed in 1999 as Teacher Librarian at Our Lady of Mercy College, Parramatta where she developed reading and Information Literacy programs. Whilst there, she became an Information and Communication Technologies Integrator and enjoyed the roll out of laptops back in 2005.

Lynn was appointed Leader of Pedagogy in 2010 with the Sydney Catholic Education Office as funded by the Federal Government’s Smarter Schools National Partnerships program. This looked at school improvement and teacher professional development. In 2013 whilst in the Library of Congress, Lynn had an awakening that reminded her that working in school libraries was her passion. Soon enough Lynn was appointed Head of Library Services at Oakhill College, Castle Hill with the task to re-imagine the Library.

Future focused schools think differently and work differently. They are designing schooling around the needs and aspirations of their students, while still meeting Australian curriculum standards and assessment.

As schools implement the new Australian Curriculum across learning areas, we are seeing how a stronger focus on inquiry is providing opportunities for schools to move beyond the ‘what’ of teaching to explore the ‘how’ of teaching. This has resulted in some schools reinventing the way they design learning spaces, rethinking the structure of the school day and academic structure of what constitutes a class, and developing personalised learning pathways for individual students within and beyond the school.

These schools are transforming what we have traditionally experienced as school education. They are future focused, and rewriting the rules of engagement in schooling. Students are engaging with issues that will directly affect their future, such as sustainability, globalisation, citizenship, and enterprise. They are developing knowledge, skills, and dispositions to help them cope with what the future may hold. They are designing, creating, and inventing new products and doing things that will help shape their lives as they move into the world of work.
