Raising awareness about digital issues in your school

Think about Week 2 of this course as the beginning of an awareness-raising campaign being implemented in your school. Note: this cannot be achieved in one week! It is more of a term-long project.

You may decide to prepare for this in Term 4 as the first phase of your digital citizenship program development.

From your reading of the CCYP and ACMA research on student and parent perspectives, you will have already noted that one of the primary sources of information is the media. So consider using some media in your awareness-raising and discussion starter consultation with parents.

Also note the provision of statistics, findings statements and recommendations in the ACMA reports. Remember to draw upon such report data (Australian Bureau of Statistics and Pew Internet are also useful sources for statistics) to inform your discussions.

Making digital citizenship issues accessible to people

The following task requires you to complete a series of steps to develop a set of one page briefs on DigCit issues.

Use the following template to develop a set of briefs on a range of digital citizenship issues that need to be addressed at your school. Then disseminate these across stakeholder groups, teachers, parents, school leadership, student representative council, etc.

Use this brief to collect further data on an issue, using the feedback from stakeholders to refine and/or expand your scope note, impact and action sections. The data collected should then be tabled at a committee meeting to discuss how this feedback can be used to inform policy and program development.

Provide a clear description of the nature and scope of the issue.

Use bullet points to break up key aspects of the issue.


Provide no more than five (5) sources that help stakeholders gain an understanding of the breadth and depth of the issue.

Try to provide a combination of formats, e.g., text, podcast, video, news article, scholarly article, etc.

Provide a brief annotation for each source regarding its relevance in helping stakeholders understand the nature and scope of the issue.


Provide details how this issue is currently impacting on your school across people, behaviours, problems, concerns, etc.

Also explain how this relates to current policy and curriculum – what aspects of current policy are relevant, where is further development required, where are the significant gaps, etc.


What needs to be done to address this issue.

Include steps to help the school move forward with this issue in terms of stakeholder involvement, planning and resourcing.


Locating sources to inform your brief

Search for relevant sources using:

  • Your library catalogue
  • Full-text databases
  • Search engines
  • Online newspaper searches
