Digital Citizenship Online Extension Courses

Tuesday, August 04, 2015

Syba Academy is excited to announce two upcoming Digital Citizenship Online Extension Courses.

  • Digital Citizenship: Core Concepts & Principles
  • Digital Citizenship: Advanced Skills & Leadership

These courses are designed to provide teachers, teacher-librarians, curriculum and e-learning coordinators with an opportunity to develop a digital citizenship policy and program to address the specific needs of their school community.

The knowledge, skills and behaviours that people of all ages as digital citizens need to develop, understand and practice are explored using Ribble’s (2011) nine elements of digital citizenship. These include: digital access, digital commerce, digital communication, digital literacy, digital etiquette, digital law, digital rights and responsibilities, digital health and wellness, and digital security.

School teams of 2-5 participants are encouraged to enrol as their school’s Digital Citizenship Working Party. This can lead to a school planning and implementing a schoolbased program to effectively address their community’s digital citizenship issues and challenges.

Each course is conducted over a period of four weeks and involves a minimum commitment of 15 hours.

Participants can complete the course in their own time, however will be expected to invest approximately 4 hours per week to complete a range of learning activities and school-based initiatives, engage in online professional discussions with the instructor and course participants, and document the outcomes of their learning according to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

A maximum of 30 participants are enrolled in this course at a time to ensure participants gain individual instruction and feedback throughout the course.

Testimonial Mt Alvernia College, Kedron, QLD

Participating in the Digital Citizenship course provided by the Syba Academy assisted us in understanding the imperative role of educators as models and stewards of digital citizenship in 21st century learning environments. It also provided us with the foundation for the digital citizenship practice and programmes in the Mount Alvernia iCentre.

Importantly, the course was the catalyst for us to evolve from a digital citizenship approach that was haphazard, to one that is intentional and systematic.

It has been a year since we completed the course and we continue to build on the foundations provided by Syba Academy. The course gave us the knowledge, resources and skills that have started us on our journey of working with the College Leadership Team on a whole-school Digital Citizenship policy that will provide vision for the college community.

We believe that by building student capacities in digital literacy and digital citizenship, the iCentre team are enacting their responsibilities as information specialists and serving as leaders in the school.

The Digital Citizenship course was the most practical and relevant professional development we have participated to support us in this. We highly recommend this course to any professional interested in developing or improving a successful digital citizenship programme within their school.

With Book Week just around the corner Syba Signs has all your promotional needs covered. We have a range of posters, banners and all new book marks to promote the 2015 theme ‘Books Light Up Our World’ or a series of generic products you can reuse year after year.

This year we are pleased to be able to offer our customers the 2015 BookWeek Ideas and Activities publication which is full of great ideas for library displays and activities including digital activities and blackline masters. This publication also includes reviews of each of the titles in the CBCA short list (excluding Older Readers). Get in before 22nd July to secure your copy.

Book Displays

A book’s cover is certainly not the only factor in book selection but it is often the deciding factor in whether we pick up a book, turn it over and read the blurb. Those first impressions are crucial in determining engagement. But as our workload increases (at a seemingly exponential rate) updating and maintaining relevant book displays can become quite a challenge. At Syba we are all about solutions and in this case our front facing book display options are just the trick!

Connected Education Summit Recap

In June we welcomed teacher librarian and technology integration specialist, Shannon McClintock Miller all the way from Denver, Colorado. Shannon inspired, challenged and motivated us to be the change we want to see in education. Her generous sharing of her own experiences and expertise gave delegates tangible examples for their own application. Shannon also shared her experience with makerspaces highlighting the way in which they can get the whole school community involved and the empowering role they can play in giving students a voice.

If you missed the seeing Shannon this time around we encourage you to connect with her online, she is a powerhouse on twitter and Facebook, regularly sharing tools, apps and articles across a plethora of subjects.

Upcoming Courses

Syba Academy is excited to announce we will be running the one day seminar, Rethinking the Collection:Principles and Practices for 21C SchoolLibraries in Sydney on Monday 16th November. Lyn Hay will lead the seminar in-conjunction with a range of current practitioners. As schools adapt and change in response to advances in technology and new pedagogical approaches, there is a need to reconsider the traditional practices in the library. Participants will explore new ways of designing library collections to best support access and learning. From genrefication, to creating engaging book displays and flexible learning spaces this day is a must for anyone who wants to make the most out of their library space.

We are also excited to announce a series of two Digital Citizenship Online Extension Courses with the first course starting very soon on Monday 24th August!

As we look to 2016 keep in mind that Syba Academy also offers accredited in school professional development that can be customised specifically for your school or network group. Just get in touch with us to find out more.

All the best!
